On our honeymoon in Hawaii we had the opportunity to do a bunch of snorkeling right on the grounds of our hotel on the Big Island. We saw a ton of tropical fish and think we have the correct names on a lot of them.
OUR FAVORITE! Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, the Hawaiian state fish (which is somewhat disputed).
Moorish Idol with possible Indo Pacific Sargeantfish
The ones below we couldn’t put a name on. If you no what any of these fish are let us know!
We can’t wait to do some more snorkeling! Hopefully in Florida!!

Last time we went snorkeling at Hanauma Bay we saw a Picasso Trigger fish. Supposedly very rare.
Looks like you had a great adventure in Hawaii. I have enjoyed the posts. Love that Humuhumunukunukuapua’a! Looks a bit like my favorite, the Arabian Picassofish (another great name, huh?) The first time Arthur and I went snorkeling was in Florida, and we enjoyed it so much that we took a scuba diving course back home when we were back from vacation. Any thoughts about taking up diving? Anyway, I know there are some great snorkeling spots in Florida. 🙂
Amy – not sure about doing any diving but definitely want to snorkel a lot more!
Wow, more than the photos, I’m impressed with your ability to correctly identify Hawaiian fish species! Not many out-of-state visitors can do that. Good job.
Aloha Tony – Thank you much! We were enamored by all the tropical fish and hope to return to Hawaii again (sooner than later!!).
