Review: Kaufman Field Guide to Nature of New England

It is often that birders go out into the field in search of birds and end up distracted greatly by all the other wonderful living creatures they come across. You could carry a bookshelf worth of field guides in your backpack but who wants that burden?

The Kaufmans, Kenn and Kimberly, did a superb job of crafting Kaufman Field Guide to Nature of New England (Kaufman Field Guides) to make it easy for naturalists to pursue interests in a wide array of subjects.

Of course you will find birds in this field guide, but you will also find identification information on wildflowers, trees, shrubs, ferns, mushrooms, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, fish, insects, and more. All the most common species of the New England area are covered.

The guide follows the same straight-forward methods of the other guides in the Kaufman series and is organized by section and in ways that make sense for each topic. For example, flowers are organized by color while birds are done by family.

Kaufman Field Guide to Nature of New England (Kaufman Field Guides) is a great asset for any person interested in nature and a excellent tool for expanding your horizon as a full-scale naturalist. There have been so many times I’ve been birding and have could have used an “all-purpose” guide like this to cross reference a tree, snake, or turtle I’ve come across.

If you live in or plan to do much exploring in the New England area, I highly recommend packing this book along.
