Queretaro Mexico Bird Conservation

The State of Queretaro is located in the heart of Mexico, just two hours away from Mexico City.

The Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve is located in northern Queretaro. This reserve is considered one of Mexico’s hot spots to visit because of its wide range of ecosystems. There are coniferous forest, jungle, semi-desert scrub, cloud forests, and chaparral. Some cool bird species there are Military Macaws, Lineated Woodpeckers, and Fork-tailed Emerald Hummingbirds.

Created in 1997, the Reserve was the result of nearly 250 regional development meetings with local residents. Community response overwhelmingly supported federal designation of the area as a biosphere reserve, the highest-conservation-priority category of the parks system in Mexico. –Earth Island Journal
