This is what happens when you have that third piece of pumpkin pie (or eat all the seed left out for the juncos)
Phriday Photo – Burning
Recently, I stumbled across a prescribed burn in action at one of our county Forest Preserves in northern Illinois. Rockford Rotary Forest Preserve, 11/13 Same location, 11/14 The after-burn wasn’t as interesting as during the burn but it was fun to walk around the charred earth and listen to the birds, singing as any normal

Phriday Photo – Mob Mentality
5 American Crows vs. Red-tailed Hawk Only one crow continued the mobbing session, following the hawk higher and higher until they were both specs. The Red-tail had the upper hand the entire time, gliding with ease as the crow struggled to gain altitude.

Fox Sparrow Passerella iliaca Ah, at last some more sparrows are returning to northern Illinois. For some reason they feel later than normal but last week brought in White-throated Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos and now White-crowned and Fox Sparrows are back. No matter how much they hide, you gotta love the subtle beauty of sparrows.
