Year of the American Crow
The first bird of 2008 is…(drum roll please!)…the American Crow!
Birdfreak and Veery tromped around Blackhawk Springs Forest Preserve in the first light of the morning on New Year’s Day and hiked for almost ten minutes before hearing a crystal clear Caw! ring out.
Past Years
- 2007 – Year of the Red-tailed Hawk

Mine was a Carolina Wren. Anything but a Starling or House Sparrow is O.K. with me. I have a friend however who goes through great lengths to make sure his first bird is a “good” bird.

The Birdfreak Team says:
We don’t exactly try to get a “good” bird, but we do try and get out to a preserve before daylight so we don’t see anything along the way.
Thanks for sharing your firsts of the year with us!
