Birding Milwaukee County Parks

Written by The Birdfreak Teamon September 14, 2009May 3, 2011

The first Rockford bird club meeting of the new season was Thursday. The speaker was Brian Russert, a conservationist closer in age to the Birdfreak Team and a person with a passion for all things natural. He presented about Milwaukee County’s park system and some of the better locations to bird. Most of the info

Devilish Trails Lead to Blood-colored Birds

Written by The Birdfreak Teamon July 24, 2008May 3, 2011

Devil’s Lake State Park near Baraboo, Wisconsin is the most visited in the state, and may very well be the most gorgeous. The best views require a rough hike that gains large amounts of elevation in a fairly short stretch. Perhaps it isn’t the lake that is the Devil’s, but the trails. By the time

Birding Baxter’s Hollow

Written by The Birdfreak Teamon July 22, 2008May 3, 2011

Nestled in the Baraboo Hills in south-central Wisconsin is a magical place called Baxter’s Hollow. Owned by the Nature Conservancy, this wooded creek corridor is not what many expect to find in Wisconsin. The rocky, rough terrain, rushing water, and the wildlife all feel either western or northern, not exactly midwestern. Singing Ovenbird This spectacular

Green-Breasted Mango – Take One

Written by The Birdfreak Teamon September 20, 2007May 3, 2011

Today after work we headed up just across the border into Wisconsin to try and see the Green-breasted Mango that was sighted in a residential backyard. Here’s how it went down. Veery was late getting back from school due to a tanker truck that rolled over on the highway. Traffic was backed up for miles

Northwoods Birding – The Lakes

Written by The Birdfreak Teamon August 23, 2007May 3, 2011

While visiting relatives in northern Wisconsin, we always travel out to some of the many lakes up there. One was Newman Lake in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The lake was lower than we have ever seen, but there were four Common Loons hanging out. We also saw two Belted Kingfishers, and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. Newman Lake

Baxter’s Hollow

Written by The Birdfreak Teamon December 14, 2006May 3, 2011

Nature Conservancy Site of the Week #2 Located in South Central Wisconsin, Baxter’s Hollow, near Baraboo, provides for excellent birding in a hidden away place. The preserve is just shy of 5,000 acres and has some 40 species of breeding forest birds. The most sought after birds at Baxter’s Hollow are the rare (for Wisconsin)
