Nene Crossing and Red-crested Cardinal

Heading to the Kalalau Lookout in Koke’e State Park in Kauai, I found this “Nene Crossing” sign.

Nene Crossing

There were no Nenes around but we saw some on a later day.

But I did find this (non-native) Red-crested Cardinal who was singing loudly.

This was almost my starting point for a 5 mile trek along the Pihea and Alakai Swamp Trails, which I will post about in the near future!

  1. I was still fairly new into birding when I went to Hawaii, but I remember fondly the Red-crested Cardinals, Java Sparrows, White-rumped Shama, and a few others. Ah…Hawaii…it really is paradise.
