Horse-Related Books

I love to read, so reading about horses is an easy task. Here is an ongoing list of books about horses, mostly non-fiction, that I have read or want to read and recommend.

Non-Fiction Horse Books to Learn About Horses

Horsekeeping Almanac by Cherry Hill – this book covers month by month tasks and chores for keeping horses. This is a great resource to come back to over and over again.

Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage by Cherry Hill – highly detailed information on getting started with keeping horses on your property. This has been my go to book as questions arise as we look to move our horse to our land.

Horse Handling & Grooming by Cherry Hill – mostly about grooming, this book is more for those that show horses. The book does have a great deal of info about how to handle your horse for grooming and for the farrier. Lots of photos, but they are black and white.

Non-Fiction Cowboy Books

The Compton Cowboys: The New Generation of Cowboys in America’s Urban Heartland by Walter Thompson-Hernandez – this book chronicles several young black cowboys from Compton that are looking to continue the tradition of horseback riding in urban areas.

Non-Fiction Books About the History of Horses

American Serengeti: The Last Big Animals of the Great Plains by Dan Flores – covers six animals of the Great Plains including wild horses. Horses originated in America and then made a return many years later. They are made for the open country found in the west.

Fiction Books With Horses

All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy (the movie is pretty good too)
