31 Cool Bird Facts #10 – Green Heron

With an old nickname of Shitepoke (the name in reference to its fecal projectiles), Green Herons (Butorides virescens) use bait to catch fish, dropping insects, twigs or even feathers onto the water surface to lure them in.

Green Herons are beautiful small herons that can be hard to see because they blend in and stay still while fishing. After the Green Heron’s breeding season ends, they sometimes wander, once in awhile straying as far as England.

Some information gathered from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

  1. I’ve often wondered where they get the moniker, considering there seems to be little “green” about them, if anything!
    Lovely photo, btw!
