Wordless Wednesday – Turkey Vulture
Birds, Conservation & the Great Outdoors
We love to travel to find new birds and participate in a lot of bird counts. We also created a Guide to Birding Field Guides and host a collection of over 300 birding links from all over the globe.
While our main focus continues to be birds, we promote other areas of conservation as well. Conserving land not only benefits wildlife, but is hugely beneficial to people as well.
We love all sorts of outdoor activities, especially hiking and spend a lot of time outside with dogs and horses. We are working to produce more articles on all sorts of outdoor fun!
Every week we bring you Bird Photography Weekly. We periodically talk about our adventures in digiscoping. Feel free to browse our photo lifelist.

This is like something out of Edgar Allen Poe–very eerie and stark.

Interesting shot. But I do have to admit that I think these are one of the ugliest birds I have ever seen. The first few times I saw them circling over my house (we have many in our area) I thought they were hawks, until I saw the head!
Bald and red and well, eewww! Hairless, I read – so they can move in and out of the cavity of whatever creature they are devouring, more easily. I have now learned to discern between the two birds in flight as the vulture has the silver under wings when soaring above.
I had one in a tree in our back yard once that I tried to get some shots of. They didn’t turn out real great – but I did get the red head …
