Birds of Winnebago County
Where there is excellent habitat, there will be excellent birding. Winnebago County has done an excellent job of creating natural places and the birds account for their success. Many wonderful species of birds spend at least part of their lives in this great county year after year. Quite a few rarities have shown up in the county, birds such as Magnificent Frigatebird and Kirtland's Warbler, but it is the expected that makes birding great here.
Each year during migration 20-30 species of Warblers in a day is possible including hard-to-find species such as Cerulean Warbler and Yellow-breasted Chat, both of which breed here. Add to this various thrushes, flycatchers, vireos, tanagers, and grosbeaks, and migration can be both amazing and overwhelming.
During the summer months it may be hot but Winnebago offers many forested areas to relax in and enjoy wonderful breeding birds. A cool walk in the woods can turn up skulking birds like Kentucky Warbler or you may be rewarded with the etheral sound of the Wood Thrush.
