Great-Horned Owl at Our Apartment

For a few weeks now we’ve had a large and beautiful Great-Horned Owl perching in a big tree by our apartment building out in the country.
I tried digiscoping but the problem is the owl always perches behind branches, near dusk, and in poor lighting (with the sun going down directly behind him).
So, here are a few bad pictures where you can sorta make out the owl. (The close up shots were too blurry.) He’s on the right side of the tree!

On our recent trip to Magee Marsh for the Biggest Week in American Birding we stopped by a demonstration of rehabilitated raptors. Back to the Wild, a rehabilitation center located in Castalia, Ohio had several birds but the owls stole the show. Not surprising because OWLS ARE SO COOL!!

One of the best things about birding is that you never know where or when you’ll find certain birds. Sure, common birds often come to feeders. And there is nothing too shocking about seeing Mallards or Canada Geese along the Rock River. But a rafter of Wild Turkeys meandering down the sidewalk in a city of 150,000 plus?
Pretty darn cool.
The turkeys were headed to a golf course.

Another wonderful thing about birding is sharing these experiences with someone you love. I surprised Stacia by taking her to see a Great-horned Owl in a nest. Despite a rather gloomy and chilly morning, we enjoyed watching the owl (who watched us as well) for several minutes. The turkeys were completely random.

World Bird Sanctuary Live Raptor Show – Starved Rock State Park

This is the third time we’ve watched the World Bird Sanctuary’s live raptor show at the Illinois Audubon Society’s Bald Eagle Weekend, but this was by far the best for photography.
First up was probably our favorite raptor in the world, the Harris’s Hawk. This is Sheldon and he flew over the crowd’s heads, causing an eruption of “oohs” and “ahhs”.
Next up was Turk, the Turkey Vulture. Some people call these fine birds “ugly” and “gross”. They do a lot for the ecosystem by cleaning up dead animals. We think they are just plain cool.
