Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo and also the Illinois Spring Bird Count. This statewide event is what we live for as birders. Not only is the count great for monitoring birds but it is a fun excuse to have a mini big day. Of course, we have to count ALL the birds we see, not just species, but that just adds to the challenge. Perhaps the hardest part is turning away from watching singing Cerulean and Yellow-throated Warblers to go count roadside Chipping Sparrows.

Will these two birds make our list? We’ll have a full report on Sunday!

Our party of three Birdfreaks have a HUGE area to cover with loads of different habitats. We are shooting for 100 species but we’ve never done this area before so who knows? Maybe even the Lazuli Bunting will still be hanging around.

We’ll be taking pictures, but as Bill of the Birds says, you either go birding or photograph birds - it’s hard to do both! And on a Spring Count, a lot of the photography is just for diagnostics.
