Delaware Dunlins Youth Birders Club

by The Birdfreak Team on November 2, 2008

The Delaware Dunlins are a cool young birders club administered by the Delmarva Ornithological Society (DOS) out of Greenville, Delaware. This young birder club offers a great deal of birding fun for those aged 6 to 18 and has three excellent veteran birders leading field trips.

Recently, DOS launched a detailed brochure to promote the young birders club. [download the PDF here] Other states or clubs within states would benefit from viewing this resource. DOS did a wonderful job in creating their brochure.

However, we do warn young birder clubs in general to use caution with the age range of their groups. It is difficult to promote the same level of birding to 6-year olds as to teenagers (something we discussed with Illinois’ up-and-coming young birder club). Once a club is established, separate marketing materials should be made available to reach the various age groups.

Big kudos goes out to Bill Stewart for getting the word out to us and for putting the effort to get such a club going. It is one thing to have an idea and quite another to put that idea into action.

Hi Eddie,
The Dunlins sound great and I see you have a new birding with teenagers download. i have not had a chance to read it yet, but i shall soon.
I was just blogging about birding with children and remembered that you do a lot with youths and birding and so included a little tidbit on your efforts and blog.
Happy birding
Dale
