Photo Life List #10 - Mississippi Kite

Mississippi Kite

My Mom got a phone call about a Mississippi Kite spotted a couple miles away from my house. We decided to try to find it because it is pretty rare around northern Illinois.

When we got there we found a group of people pointing in to the sky. That is how we found where the Mississippi Kite was. This is a really cool LIFER for me! :-)

There was two of them and they were soaring around and they flew really low and we got a great view. I got some really cool photos.

Congrats! That would be a lifer for me, too!

Kites are really cool birds, aren’t they? The Mississippi Kite would also be a lifer for me. The only kite I’ve seen so far (and that was last year) was the white-tailed kite. I loved how it was able to hover over something, much like a hummingbird can do. That was so fascinating to me, especially since kites are not small birds. Great job, and really good photos, Dakota.

You are lucky to see the Mississippi Kite while it was still flying around your area. It must be migrating. Hopefully you will be able to find a nest some place close next year.

They nest not too far from where I live. I have been lucky to see the nest and several very young birds being fed by their parents.

A very handsome bird. Great photos too.
