Birding

We love to travel to find new birds and participate in a lot of bird counts. We also created a Guide to Birding Field Guides and host a collection of over 300 birding links from all over the globe.

Conservation

While our main focus continues to be birds, we promote other areas of conservation as well. Conserving land not only benefits wildlife, but is hugely beneficial to people as well.

Outdoors

We love all sorts of outdoor activities, especially hiking and spend a lot of time outside with dogs and horses. We are working to produce more articles on all sorts of outdoor fun!

Photography

Every week we bring you Bird Photography Weekly. We periodically talk about our adventures in digiscoping. Feel free to browse our photo lifelist.

Super Large Flock of American White Pelicans

September 7, 2011 | 3 comments

I absolutely love American White Pelicans. They are massive and beautiful with a wingspan of 9 feet or more. While in Minnesota we were standing at Garvin Heights which overlooks the city of Winona. We were delighted to spot a flock of a dozen or so pelicans gracefully flying by. Then a short time later [...]

The Amazing Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)

August 25, 2011 | No comment

I love sites that collect groups of goodness, especially videos and imagery. I was directed to a website through a friend that is absolutely amazing called ARKive. It is a collection of images and videos using some of the best photographers and videographers of nature. Wildlife films and photos are vital weapons in the battle [...]

Stacia and I decided to spend a few hours last Sunday at Shabbona Lake State Park with Bella. It was hotter than we expected and bird activity was pretty low. But we did manage to see quite a bit of interesting butterflies and some Forster’s Terns hunting in the lake. Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Monarch Happy [...]

Great-Horned Owl at Our Apartment

August 4, 2011 | 1 comment

For a few weeks now we’ve had a large and beautiful Great-Horned Owl perching in a big tree by our apartment building out in the country. I tried digiscoping but the problem is the owl always perches behind branches, near dusk, and in poor lighting (with the sun going down directly behind him). So, here [...]

Dickcissels were calling constantly from all directions. Dickcissel Bella Nova Scotia Thirsty pup going for a drink Beautiful open farm country!

State Record in Ohio – Cassin’s Sparrow

July 13, 2011 | No comment

Recently, a Cassin’s Sparrow was located in Shelby County, Ohio; a state record! Blogged by Jim McCormick, an Ohioan who believes that “The more of us who care, the more likely that our natural world will survive.” He writes Ohio Birds and Biodiversity and on June 14th wrote up an excellent post on this find. [...]

House Wren Feeding and Fecal Sac Removal

June 27, 2011 | 1 comment

A pair of House Wrens decided to nest outside my parent’s picture window, providing a near constant show. We witnessed several feedings and at least two baby mouths inside the box. Then we saw one of the young stick its rear out the nest hole and deposit a fecal sac into its parent’s mouth for [...]

June 21, 2011 | No comment

This video was taken at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge in Kauai, Hawaii. This is one of many pairs of nesting Wedge-tailed Shearwaters that have burrows all over the point. Listen to the crazy sound they make! You may need to hit “refresh” to view video.
