31 Cool Bird Facts #27 – American White Pelican

by The Birdfreak Team on October 27, 2008

There are eight pelican species in the world and the American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) is the larger of the two species found in North America. and is also the only white-colored one. [Other pelicans are white as well.]

American White Pelicans dip their heads under the water to scoop up fish. They will work together in a circle to group up the fish and then will all scoop at the same time. It is an amazing sight.

Aren’t most of the world’s pelican species actually white or off-white?
I love the way your photo catches the birds gliding just inches above the water–classic!

Rick – oops! I’ve only seen Brown and Am. White, so I think we meant to originally say something else. I do love the way they will feed in large groups.

Pelicans are one of the most fun birds to photograph!!
