Semipalmated Plovers [Charadrius semipalmatus] are common shorebirds that can best be described as small, brown and white, and completely adorable.

Semipalmated Plovers

The Semipalmated Plover has been seen to swim short distances across small water channels during foraging while on migration. Chicks also swim short distances to follow parents to small islets on shallow lakes. - Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s All About Birds

They are awfully sweet. Years ago one of their cousins drove me nuts, however. I worked security (12-hr shifts,) at a plant that had a resident killdeer that wouldn’t shut the hell up. Virtually 12 straight hours of “killdeer! killdeer!” really takes the novelty out of it.
