Bird Photography Weekly #53 – Year Two Already!!
August 30, 2009
Article in: Bird Photography Weekly
Wow!! Today marks the 53rd edition of Bird Photography Weekly and the beginning of the second year of bird photography greatness! Join in on the fun and spread the word like crazy!!
It is hard to believe a whole year has passed since we introduced this new concept. Our first week we had a respectable 11 submissions. Over the weeks the numbers increased steadily as word spread. In May of 2009 we recorded our best total of 33 submissions (perhaps as migration was in full swing).
The number of wonderful photo-links is stunning: over 1,000 links or roughly 19 a week!! We hope to smash that total in this second year as we conquer some of the difficulties using “Mister Linky” and discover new ways to share this wonderful photo-sharing meme.

August 28, 2009

Male Indigo Buntings are one of the most beautiful birds we get on a regular basis here in northern Illinois. They are also some of the more digiscopable birds. This was taken with our trusty Swarovski Digiscoping Setup.
Birding Missouri – Dakota’s Arrival
August 27, 2009
Article in: Birding
Veery has temporarily moved! The Birdfreak Team is partially split for the summer/fall as Veery spends six months working in Jefferson City, Missouri. Her son Dakota has moved as well now that the summer fun has ended with a new school year. Join them as they answer the question: How’s the birding in Mid Missouri?
Dakota has started school in Jefferson City, Missouri. He is officially a seventh grader! The past couple of weeks have not given us much time for birding but we are excited about upcoming events.
We will be joining the River Bluffs Audubon Society that just-so-happens to meet on the exact same night as Rockford’s bird club (NCIOS). We also will be participating in Columbia, Missouri’s BioBlitz at Eagle Bluff Conservation Area by attending an early morning bird walk.
Good birding everyone and look for more updates about Missouri soon!
Sight-seeing in Missouri with the parents have left little time for birding!

Birdfreak Guide to Taking Kids Birding: Overhaul
August 24, 2009
Article in: Updates
The summer has been extremely busy and has sailed by in a fun-filled blur. One of the big projects we are working on is a complete overhaul of the “Birdfreak Guide to Taking Kids Birding”.
Some of what we hope to accomplish:
- One guide split into two age groups, each of which can be printed separately as needed
- Dozens of new topics discussed
- Increased recommended books and web-based resources
- Translation into Spanish
There is no set deadline for this project but traditionally the updates have been done near the end of September. We’re hoping to meet that time frame.
If you have any suggestions of what to add please download the guides and give us your opinion (either in the comments below or by contacting us directly.)
